(UPDATE) ARJO Atayde, Vice Ganda and Marian Rivera emerged as the top acting honorees at the 73rd Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (Famas) Awards held Friday night at the Manila Hotel.
Atayde shared the Best Actor trophy with Vice Ganda, while Rivera won Best Actress for her role in the political drama “Balota.”
JL Burgos’ “Alipato at Muog,” a documentary on the 2007 disappearance of activist Jonas Burgos, was named Best Picture and also earned Burgos the Best Director award.
Atayde, who starred in “Topakk,” used his speech to highlight mental health awareness.
“Thank you so much for the recognition, for noticing the work we did in ‘Topakk.’ To the soldiers, thank you for inspiring us to make this story. Not everyone with a ‘topak’ [quirk or mental struggle] really has a problem. We are all unique in our own ways, most of the time misunderstood. To anyone and everyone who experiences mental health issues, know that you are loved and you are never alone,” Atayde said.
He also thanked producers Nathan Studios, Strawdogs Studio Productions, and Fusee, as well as director Richard Somes, his co-actors, family, and wife, actress-host Maine Mendoza.
“This award will serve as another source of inspiration for me to do better every time I face a new chapter. May everyone in this pavilion continue to be soldiers of the industry. Let’s not tire of giving color, inspiration and direction to our industry. Let’s continue to support Philippine cinema,” Atayde added.

Vice Ganda, who won for “And the Breadwinner Is...,” reflected on breaking barriers in the industry.
“This is actually my second Famas trophy. My first Famas trophy was given years back, but I wasn’t able to receive it because I had a gig somewhere, so my mom came here in my place. I was given the very first Comedy King Dolphy Memorial Award, and I want to use this moment to thank you for choosing me for that honor,” he said.
“This time, Best Actor. Even just the nomination made me so proud, and then I won. Thank you so, so much. Thank you to Famas for making the very first blonde, full-makeup, in a black gown, the recipient of the Best Actor award. May this award inspire all queer kids to embrace the endless possibilities the world has to offer. Because as a queer person, your possibilities are limitless,” the comedian added.
Rivera, who portrayed a teacher in “Balota,” dedicated her award to Filipino educators.
“My experiences in ‘Balota’ are truly unforgettable. I feel it wasn’t just for myself, because I learned so much about what’s really happening in our country. I hope that everyone who watched ‘Balota’ received the heavy but important message of Teacher Emmy. So to all the Teacher Emmys out there and to everyone who represents our teachers — their dedication, their sacrifices, and their love for the nation — this is for you,” she said.
Other major winners included Nadine Lustre (“Uninvited”) for Best Supporting Actress and Jeric Raval (“Mamay”) for Best Supporting Actor.
Kathryn Bernardo was honored with the Bida sa Takilya Award, while veteran actress and lawmaker Vilma Santos received the Famas Circle of Excellence Award.
